Problems with demand for Teslas in Europe: What's behind the drop in sales?

Tesla, an electric car manufacturer known for its innovation, is struggling with demand problems in the European market. In January 2025, there was a significant drop in registrations of their vehicles, raising questions about the causes of this trend. In addition to strong competition, speculation is beginning to emerge about the impact of CEO Elon Musk's political activities on the company's image. What are the main factors affecting Tesla's sales in Europe?

In January 2025, Tesla's $TSLAsales in Europe fell by a robust 45%, with only 9,945 Tesla-branded EVs registered, down from 18,161 vehicles in January 2024. This decline is particularly alarming given that overall EV sales in Europe are up 37.3%. While demand for EVs in general is growing, Tesla remains on the sidelines.

Among the key reasons are new models from competitors such as Volkswagen, Renault and Chinese brands such as BYD and Geely, which are bringing competitive EVs to the market. Germany, the UK and the Netherlands have seen a significant increase in EV sales, suggesting that customers are turning to other brands.

Another possible reason for Tesla's sales decline is the wait for the new version of the Model Y, which is currently undergoing an upgrade. This model is one of the brand's best-selling cars, so its temporary absence from the market may be a factor that has deterred customers.

Another factor that comes up in discussions about Tesla's sales decline is Elon Musk's political involvement. Musk's support for the far-right AfD party in Germany, his controversial political statements and behaviour, such as gesticulating what has been described as a Nazi salute, may have affected the perception of the Tesla brand in Europe. Activists protesting against his political views and associating his name with political controversies may negatively affect Tesla's image.

In addition, analysts point to Tesla's regional problems in California and the EU, where sales have been steadily declining since early 2023. Germany has seen a nearly 60% drop in Tesla registrations, and a similar trend is evident in France, Norway and the UK.

While some analysts believe that Elon Musk's political moves may have a negative impact on Tesla's image, others believe that these are issues that are still manageable for the brand. For investors, it's important to keep an eye on sales results in the first quarter of 2025, when Tesla will release new production and delivery numbers.

So it's not an easy year for Tesla, and its path in the European market will depend on how it manages to deal with the competition and political issues that are starting to affect its global strategy.
